The challenge of prevention and promotion research and development is a multistage process. Effective prevention of mental health problems and effective promotion of mental well being requires first that we understand the basic biological, psychological, and social underpinnings of psychological well being and psychological disorder. This challenge is best met through research designed to understand adaptation processes throughout the entire life span. Beyond the identification of basic processes lies the challenge of research and development efforts aimed at the creation and maintenance of psychological resilience in the face of many forms of adversity. We need to ask: What familial, educational, and societal processes promote resilience? Can the skills underlying resilient responses to adversity be learned? Does helping individuals, families and communities increase their resilience also protect them from psychological disorder and also promote better mental health? If the answer to these questions is “yes,” we then need to translate this knowledge into rigorously evaluated and evidence-based practices and programmes that can be adopted by a wide range of institutions in society. |
