Resilience is a promising avenue for prevention and promotion efforts in mental health. As the word implies, resilience is the capacity to respond adaptively to challenge and adversity and is believed to be a protective factor in the development of mental health. While we are still gaining an understanding of the biological, psychological and social roots of resilience, epidemiological and developmental research is beginning to show that individuals with fewer resilience resources such as social support and coping skills are at higher risk for mental disorder. We also have evidence that teaching people to use resilience enhancing resources effectively reduces their risk for depression and other adverse mental health outcomes. The challenge before us is to understand better and enhance resilience promoting resources in many of our social institutions including families, schools, neighborhoods, and communities both through improved policy and practice. |
